FYI: BUSINESS LICENSE RENEWAL UNDERWAY

The Business and Professional License Ordinance for the City of Marion requires every person engaged in any calling, business, occupation or profession within the limits of the City of Marion to renew his or her annual business license fee and to obtain a license. The City of Marion Business License Renewal applications were mailed to business owners on May 28. Current business licenses expire on June 30, 2010. To get a 2010-2011 business license, a completed renewal application and remittance must be received in the City of Marion Business License Department by July 31, 2010 to avoid a penalty. Penalties for late payment will be assessed beginning August 1, 2010 and will increase each month thereafter. Failure to receive a renewal notice does not relieve a business owner of the responsibility of getting a business license. Anyone with questions should call Lakesha Shannon, City Clerk, (843) 423-5961 or e-mail her at lshannon@marionsc.gov

Marion is named Tree City USA for 18th year

The City of Marion has been named a Tree City USA for the 18th year by the Arbor Day Foundation.
The designation recognizes Marion's commitment to urban forestry, Mayor Rodney Berry said, and is given because the city demonstrates its decision to care for our trees year after year through proper tree planting and maintenance.
"We understand the important role trees play in our lives," Berry said, "such as providing cover that helps us have a healthier and cooler place to live and acting as filters for dust and other air-borne particles."
The award is a tribute, Berry said, to the city's Street and Sanitation departments, headed by Ronnie Sanders and Winky Fore, and all they and their men do for the city's trees. It's also a tribute to the members of the Azalea Garden Club and City Tree Commission and the work they do, he added.

City has groundbreaking on new fire department substation: City of Marion officials gathered recently for the groundbreaking of the city's new fire substation on Sen. Gasque Road. To fund the project, the city secured a community development block grant through the Pee Dee Council of Governments for $500,000, $50,000 from the USDA Rural Development through a community facilitites grant and is pitching in $115,000 in cash and services.

.

The nearly two-acre site is near Palmetto Point Road and Marion Intermediate School in east Marion. The substation will be a single story pre-engineered metal building, about 7,920 square feet and will house a crew and engine. Landowner Jerry Richardson donated the site to the city to be used as for the substation. Chief Alan Ammons said construction of the facility is about three years in the making and when completed will help the city secure a Class 4 ISO rating, saving homeowners money on insurance.
